Atlanta
The Hawks got a massive lift from Al Horford in Game 5, as he came back to the starting lineup for the 1st time since hurting his pectoral muscle back in early January. I actually don’t believe the Hawks will be in a position to keep the series alive with another win at Boston, but you’ve got to wonder whether they can even be able to keep this game close. Logging those kind of minutes in the playoffs this late in the series could leave Atlanta with no legs in Game 6.
Boston
In my opinion the Celtics have to like their chances of winning this series on Thursday. The Hawks had to use a lot of energy to win game 5. Boston has already won two games at home in the series, including an easy 101-79 win in Game 4. I don’t think there is any question the Celtics played hard in Game 5, but I look for them to turn up the intensity for Game 6. I expect Boston to treat this game like they’re the team on the brink of elimination, as they don’t want to return to Atlanta for a Game 7.
After putting up 101 points on 51% shooting in Game 4, I wasn’t all that shocked to see Boston struggle offensively in Game 5. This team isn’t built to put up those type of numbers on a regular basis. Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett tied for a team-high 16 points, Ray Allen came off the bench to drop 15, and Rajon Rondo added 13 points and 12 assists.
The Celtics aren’t built to win games with their offense. They take out their opponents with great defense, and I suspect that will be the decisive factor in Game 6. Watch for head coach Doc Rivers and his staff to change up the defensive gameplan to match Hawks new starting five and really make things difficult for Atlanta offensively. I think a another offensive showing like they had in Game 5, will be more than sufficient for the Celtics to win the series and advance to the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
